Being a coastal community, the City of Campbell River has faced challenges with flood and erosion hazards both along its riverfront from high river flows, and oceanfront from high tides and storm surges. These hazards are expected to increase due to sea level rise. NHC conducted vulnerability assessments based on detailed shoreline wave model results to assess sea level rise impacts on the City’s infrastructure systems located within the inundation zones. Working with a team of landscape architects, planners, and geotechnical engineers, NHC developed technically sound mitigation options for adaptation to sea level rise, developed high level cost estimates, and conducted a series of public workshops to obtain public feedback on the mitigation options.
