Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, I have always been fascinated by the region’s rivers, particularly their varied forms, ecosystems, and capacity for change. When I discovered a field of study that captured these elements, I enthusiastically chose to specialize on a primary mechanism of river change: sediment transport. Since joining NHC in 2000, I have gained experience on a variety of river engineering and habitat restoration projects along the west coast, from California to Alaska. Although varied, these projects have all shared the common engineering challenges between society, rivers, and habitat. In a recent project, I oversaw the hydraulic and morphologic analyses, as well as post-project channel and habitat monitoring, for a large flood reduction dredging project on the lower Cedar River in Renton, Washington. When not at work, I can usually be found exploring rivers in search of various fishes.
