Little Arkansas River, Wichita, Kansas
Physical Hydraulic Modelling, Water Supply Infrastructure
A new river water intake is proposed on the right bank of the Little Arkansas River as part of the Wichita Water Utilities’ Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) project. The wet well has nine bays, each with a 12.75 cfs submersible pump, and a firm capacity of 102 cfs. NHC used a combination of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and physical hydraulic modelling to evaluate and optimize the performance of the proposed river water intake and pumping station. This included evaluating potential sediment movement in the vicinity of the screens, assessing solids deposition in the individual pump bays, determining if the initial design provided adequate approach hydraulics to the pumps, and evaluating bank stability. Modifications to the design were required to improve flow hydraulics to the pumps and reduce O&M costs for maintenance dredging.
