NHC conducted a study to investigate the potential changes to coastal geomorphology at Roberts Bank associated with a proposed three-berth terminal expansion project. The proposed terminal is located on the Fraser River Delta and has the potential to alter the natural regime of coastal processes that shapes and maintains the inter-tidal and sub-tidal portions of the delta, which supports a number of valued ecosystem components. NHC followed a three-pronged approach that relied on numerical modelling, predictive geomorphic assessment, and empirical calculations to ensure that the study was robust and that there were multiple lines of evidence for determination of the key predictions. The coastal geomorphology study informs the effects assessment of numerous valued components, including marine vegetation, fish, mammals, and birds. Field investigations included instrumentation to measure waves, currents, salinity, and sediment transport, as well as sediment sampling and measurements of erosion and deposition patterns.
