Designing water crossings to ensure passage for fish, other aquatic organisms, and wildlife is important for restoring ecological conditions and recovering endangered species while providing a safe roadway for the travelling public. Effective water crossing design utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach that can include hydrologists, geomorphologists, hydraulic engineers, fish biologists, structural engineers, geotechnical engineers, and roadway engineers, as well as project stakeholders and resource agencies. Our integrated design approach results in water crossings that maintain or restore access to valuable aquatic and wildlife habitat while providing long-term, self-sustaining infrastructure. NHC has designed and overseen construction of hundreds of water crossings throughout the US and Canada for federal, state, county, provincial, municipal, and tribal clients. We have been involved with development of design guidance and research to provide practical methods for designing successful water crossings. Our functional and sustainable infrastructure solutions incorporate sound science and engineering to meet the full range of transportation, environmental, and public needs.
