About Us
Northwest Hydraulic Consultants (NHC) is an international firm of civil engineers and geoscientists providing professional services for the development, management, and protection of water resources. A career at NHC has you working within a specialized team of geoscientists, water resources engineers, hydrologists, surveyors, field technicians, and GIS specialists.
About the Role
As an Intermediate Coastal Engineer, you will have the opportunity to implement state-of-the-art coastal engineering methods to address problems related to natural coastal hazards (e.g., flooding, erosion, sedimentation) and shoreline design in the context of climate change and variability.
Based in our Seattle office, you will be involved in a range of coastal engineering analysis and design work, such as met-ocean analysis, wave and hydrodynamic modeling, ports and harbor design, and design of shoreline erosion protection structures including nature-based designs. Responsibilities will also include project management and project-related tasks, including fieldwork, construction supervision, report writing, data analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of marine and coastal processes (e.g., waves, currents, water levels, and sediment transport).
Required Skills and Experience:
- Master’s degree or higher in coastal, port or ocean engineering.
- A license to practice engineering (PE) in Washington and Alaska or eligibility to obtain them.
- 5+ years of work experience in the field of coastal or ocean engineering including experience in numerical modeling, coastal engineering design, and hazard assessment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience completing technical assignments in a team environment.
- Proven experience in engineering calculations and analyses in support of coastal engineering design.
- Ability to undertake site inspections of shoreline structures, including travel to and work in remote sites in Alaska.
- The ability to conduct statistical analysis utilizing large data sets.
- Proven ability to conduct independent analysis, develop visualizations, and interpret complex physical processes by analyzing geospatial time series data.
Qualifications
Experience in some of the following is also considered an asset but not required:
- Proven ability to develop and apply numerical models for the simulation of waves, currents, sediment transport, and morphology change in open coast, inlet, and estuarine environments. NHC utilizes a wide suite of coastal engineering software including SWAN, SWASH, TELEMAC, X-Beach, Mike 21, CMS-Flow and CMS-Wave, Particle Tracking Module, and Delft-3D.
- High technical standards and a commitment to delivering high quality work products.
- The ability to define problems, prioritize tasks, and meet agreed upon timelines.
- Experience with computer aided design (CAD) software such as AutoDesk Civil 3D.
- Demonstrated project management, collaboration, and teamwork skills.
